Almyras – Culture and Environmental workshop

Almyras is a non-profit organization, established in 2012 in Ayia Varvara village, in Nicosia district. The aim of the workshop is to deal with cultural and environmental issues in the wider regions of southern Nicosia and generally in the countryside. The members of Almyras are farmers, educators, scientists, researchers, artists, authors, literary people, pupils, housewives, skilled people, who all share the same passion for culture and environment. The name of the organization derived from the homonymous hill between Ayia Varvara and Sia villages. The hill is of high importance for the region, as it is the only ancient unit (600BC) used for both producing and processing copper which has been found in Cyprus until today.

Almyras’s logo is a drawing of an earthen pot found in Cyprus and depicts a boat with its crew. The original port from Mid-Copper period 1700-1600 BC is exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The logo was inspired by a free version of the original pot at the Cyprus Handicraft Service. The logo was designed by the artist Christoforos Papachristoforou.

Almyras main objectives are:

  • The promotion of the countryside, through several activities and events
  • The recovery, collection, elaboration, promotion and strengthening of folklore, historical and traditional elements of the countryside.
  • The organization of several events which aim to inform its members and residents of the wider area.
  • To form a network of scientists, literate people and artists to share their knowledge with the residents of the wider area.
  • Research development in the fields of science, technology and environment.
  • A powerful presence by taking initiatives and participating in local, peripheral and international partnerships and programs which are related to the subject of the activities of the workshop.
