Through music to sustainability

The music group “Coldplay” has many fans in Lithuania, and it is really wonderful that Lithuania is included in the impressive music and laser show 2024 TOUR of the group “Coldplay”, during which 70 concerts will be held. Two impressive concerts will take place in the biggest cities of the country, Vilnius and Kaunas. A world-class team of directors, a specially prepared powerful light and laser show, top-quality performers, well-known hits, all of this is coming to Lithuania during the 2024 tour. This is a huge celebration for the fans of this group, who on October 4-5 will have the opportunity to see an impressive event with “kinetic floors” and “dynamic bicycles”, with their help, the audience will be able to contribute to the production of electricity at concerts. Young people are very fascinated by the smart app “Coldplay #MusicOfTheSpheresWorldTour”, which allows you to follow the band’s activities and buy tickets to its concerts.

Today, more and more people in the music industry and musicians are trying to contribute to the sustainability and ecology of our planet in various ways. People are trying to apply as much as possible to the achievements of industry and information technology to implement the sustainability program. Many music creators strive to write songs or create albums that promote sustainability, ecology or consider current ecological issues. Minimal use of physical product is gaining popularity: Music labels are promoting digital consumption of music content, which would reduce the need for physical discs to be produced and transported. Music therapy can be used as a tool to raise awareness of conservation issues and promote sustainability. Music events and various concerts can be organized in such a way as to reduce their impact on the environment. This may include the use of renewable energy sources, less plastic waste, etc. i.e. renewable energy sources are no longer new in the music industry: many music studios and concert venues are trying to use modern renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind turbines to reduce their ecological footprint. These are just a few ideas of how music can relate to sustainability. The example is the implementation of the ideas of sustainability of the popular British band Coldplay during concerts. After starting the world tour “Music of the Spheres” last year, the band took unconventional decisions in order to reduce the negative impact on the environment. The audience is also encouraged to contribute to this goal, not only by dancing on the “kinetic floor” ” or by riding bicycles and thereby generating electricity at concerts, but also by using a smart app specially created for this tour „Coldplay #MusicOfTheSpheresWorldTour“.

In 2022, the Group set a goal to cut in half its CO2 emissions footprint compared to the 2016-2017 world tour. The performers have taken many measures to reduce the impact on the environment. At concerts, electricity from renewable sources is used, solar panels are installed behind the stage, for every ticket sold, the band undertook to plant a tree, and 10% of income – for environmental protection. The music group has partnered with Neste to reduce the CO2 emissions of their Music of the Spheres world tour by 50% compared to the group’s previous world tour. The company will supply Coldplay with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to help reduce air travel pollution, while Neste’s renewable diesel will help reduce the emissions of the band’s ground transport and stage equipment.

It is a great example of what the human desire to live and work in a cleaner and greener way can do, and sustainable music can be a great tool in school to raise awareness of environmental challenges and encourage green and sustainable actions.

Several eighth-twelfth-grade students of Marijampole Art and other schools are already using this app and are very interested in spreading ideas of sustainability in society. They, extending the initiative of the group “Coldplay” – to plant a tree for every ticket sold – decided to do it in their school. As soon as you buy a ticket, everyone will plant a tree on the school grounds, thereby contributing to the generation of CO2 emissions.
